Monday Ramble #62: 8 Reasons You Should & Shouldn’t Listen To Frank Ocean

Monday ramble #62: 8 Reasons Why You Should And Shouldn’t Listen To Frank Ocean

For those of you that don’t know or care, I am a fan of Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean is an R&B singer down with Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All and he is currently signed to Def Jam with an album dropping on July 17th entitled Channel Orange. He recently revealed the fact that he is indeed bisexual or gay or whatever. Some of you are wondering what this means, how will this affect his sales, the urban music world, and the youth of today. Well I don’t have the answer. But I do have some reasons why you should keep listening to the dude. And I threw in some reasons why you shouldn’t. Read on.

1. Publicity Stunt?
How many times have we heard about artists and celebrities coming up with schemes and plans to get notoriety right before album releases? Fifty beefed with Kanye, Jay-Z stabbed Un, R. Kelly urinated on…well maybe that one wasn’t planned but you know what I mean. Read the rest of this entry »

Monday Ramble #61 – “The Real Reason Pacquiao Lost The Fight”

I figured it out ladies and gentlemen. It took me all weekend and I may be slow, and some of you may have already guessed the real reason Pacquiao lost so I admit I was late on this one. Let me say I’m not the biggest boxing fan. I don’t know why they score the rounds 10 to 9, when they could be scored 2 to 1 or just put “Win to Loss.” See, I’m an idiot. I was a fan back when Tyson was fighting and there were real heavyweights around.

Seeing what happened to Muhammad Ali made me less of a fan. And after people got knocked out in the early rounds against Tyson and we called it wack, then fights would go the distance and we got pissed, I think I needed soul-searching. There’s something about seeing two guys try to beat each other up, and then being disappointed that neither of them was hit with a devastating blow that would render them nearly unconscious that makes you look in the mirror and question your own views of entertainment.

We all love to watch a good fight. I tune in to Basketball Wives just in case some of those refined, mature ladies start swinging and throwing bottles. I used to peep Jerry Springer here and there as a kid, and the original Karate Kid was one of my favorites (Sweep the leg). Read the rest of this entry »

How Hip-Hop Died Part 1: “The Death Of The DJ”

How Hip-Hop Died Part 1 “The Death Of The DJ”

Every time I write about hip-hop or speak on it lately, I find myself drifting into a world of negativity. And I am not alone. Whenever my brethren and I get together we are reminiscing on the golden era or saying how much we don’t listen to the radio or don’t have any albums we’re looking forward to. Part of it is due to the fact that in those convos there are at least four out of ten people that wish they were on radio or MTV or whatever. The other interesting thing is that even if we were in a golden era right now, we wouldn’t recognize it.

But most of it is credited to an evolution of a genre that has grown up right before our eyes. It started out pure and different, it is one of the only art forms that can be used to address issues, inspire, express, tell stories and also humiliate. It became industrialized and calculated, but it is now making a desperate attempt to return to its roots as a voice of its followers. But is that possible? Is it too late? The answer is not simple, but first we must analyze the question. And that question is: How did it happen? How did hip-hop just become hip? Read the rest of this entry »

Monday Ramble #58 “Ten Reasons To Be Scrooge This Year”

10 Reasons To Be Scrooge This Year

1.Merry Christmas

When is anyone ever really merry? Unless you’re a leprechaun, or a Smurf, or a gnome, or an elf, or one of the Merrymen, I can’t see it. Merry includes sing-talking, jovial dancing, and spreading cheer to others so they feel better or worse about the life they’re living.

Chances are they’re going to feel worse. When I think of anyone being merry, I envision tights, footsies, ukuleles, rainbows, orange moons, green clovers…you get the idea.

Not even slaphappy toddlers fit the description. How did this word become the sole adjective responsible for well wishes on December 25th? No one ever says, “Have a delightful Christmas,” or “Hope you had a swell Christmas.” I’m just saying, I don’t want to be merry.

2.Carol Lyrics

What the hell is a one-horse open sleigh anyway?

Monday Ramble #57 “I Wrote A Book”

Monday Ramble # 57 I Wrote A Book

People ask me why did I decide to write a book, and I tell them I didn’t make the decision consciously. When I was a kid and I watched Saturday Night Live and Jack Handey’s Deep Thoughts flashed on the screen, I thought they were the funniest things ever.

Thoughts like these:

“I’ll never forget the time my friend Stew went skydiving. Boy, what a mistake that was! First of all, his parachute didn’t open. Second, we didn’t have the right address, so before we got there we got lost and went driving all around for almost an hour. And third, when we finally did get there, Stew tried to back out and we had to talk him into going.

“The crows seemed to be calling his name, thought Caw”

“The other day I got out my can-opener and was opening a can of worms when I thought, What am I doing?!”

Monday Ramble #56 “The Numbers Game” (My Book Is Here!!!)

Monday Ramble #56 “The Numbers Game” (My Book Is Here!!!)

For those of you that don’t know, The Brother Victorious, our co-host Jasmine and I have a Blogtalk radio show that we broadcast every Tuesday evening at 8pm called The Emotion Picture. I am dropping a new CD entitled The Calling with coast2coastmixtapes.com hopefully on January 12th of 2012.

On December 10th of this year, I am pre-releasing my book full of these rambles and 100 copies will be available.

Why am I telling you this? So you can tune in, buy, listen, support or whatever it is that will cause the numbers to go up. Why do we want numbers to go up? Why does anyone want numbers to go up? So people can see the numbers, think you’re doing it big, follow you on Twitter, talk about you, make you halfway famous and somehow, someway, one day the numbers in your bank account can magically go up.

The only numbers we want really low are bills. When you open up a bill you always hope that it’s zero. Like maybe the bill people messed something up, or the phone company forgot about you, the landlord or mortgage company didn’t count November for some reason, or possibly you didn’t use enough electricity so they gave you a month on the house. That never happens though. Instead, those numbers represent what you owe.
